"When I was ten I heard my brother play Metallica's
'Kill Them All' for the first time. I'm still listening to
thrash, the new Metallica and Anthrax album and I love the
band called Sikth. They play very well and very fast."
Rodrigo then turns to Gabriela "Though you don't listen
to much do you?"
His question is met with a friendly slap on the shoulder and
a cheery laugh from his female musical companion. Proudly
Gabriela admits to currently enjoying Sting's new album 'Sacred
Love'. Rodrigo then turns interviewer and asks me "What
do I think of Sting?" The conversation then digresses
into the world of Sting and The Police. I decide to inject
a question to bring the conversation back round. What would
they say was the tone of their album?
"Acoustic music," laughs Gabriela loudly. "It's
all kinds of music played in an acoustic way."
In another interview Rodrigo had stated that they see themselves
as "travelling and performing musicians" and that
"in a live performance they want people to enjoy the
music as it sounds, not for what it sounds like." Isn't
that the beauty of the acoustic guitar that it is mobile and
it makes the music more important?
"If I play the acoustic guitar I find it more easy to
connect with people," begins Gabriela. "I do kind
of feel more intimate because you can share something with
people." The room falls quiet, it was a moment of seriousness
that even Gabriela realises. "What the fuck?" she
laughs.
The duo has received critical acclaim over recent past gigs,
particularly as Damien Rice's special guests for his sell
out Union Chapel gig and later at the Shepherd Bush Empire.
Gabriela admits that they never expected such a reaction.
When they left Mexico they were close to signing to a major
label, however they had other ideas. "After eight years
of trying to make it as a Mexican heavy metal band it gets
a bit tiring," admits Rodrigo. >>
