"It was probably
one of the best shows of the tour," admits Rob. "We
were meant to be doing Top Of The Pops in the afternoon, it
was pretty surreal. It finished really late and so we were about
an hour and a quarter late getting to Northampton."
When asked about if appearing on TOTP would fulfil a childhood's
dream,
Colin seems unimpressed by the whole occasion "I guess
so," he admits.
Rod expresses no similar excitement about the whole event. "It
was quite disappointing to be honest. The studio is quite tiny
and the audience was
about sixty people."
Was it anyway affected by wee Gail Porter's chirpy introduction
as Idlewild
being a boy band with guitars?
"No. I was just happy that she just told everybody we were
playing live,"
laughs Rod. "Otherwise everybody would have thought we
were miming to a crap record." It's a comment that sends
us all into laughter. Idewild crap,
yeah right tell us another.
It was a tour that also saw the band reschedule a Bristol gig,
why? Well who would turn down your first national television
appearance at the request of a certain Jools Holland.
It seems a long time since the band started, okay I wasn't there
but as Rob would reflect a few years earlier there had been
several interesting moments.
"I think it was at the Hope & Anchor, one of our first
gigs, you could look into the crowd and make out Steve Lamacq
dancing and singing along. It was like 'Oh my, he actually knows
the words', I found that quite hilarious."
From the Hope & Anchor in Islington to Club Quattro in Tokyo
to the Mercury Lounge in New York, it's all becoming part of
the history of an extremely talented band travelling at a decent
speed on the road to success. The road
led to America but is there any plans to return?
"There's a delay due the label merger," declares Rod.
"The album launch
has been put back, we have to wait and see."
So there were no plans to merge the two records together then?
"No," states Rod firmly. "There was talk about
doing that with 'Hope' and 'Captain' because it's only on import
over there but it never happened. >>
