"The songs are fine, but we don't like the production,"
they moaned.
Ouch! So the band determined to get it right, brought in Martyn
Phillips to produce. He did 'Right Here, Right Now'. You know
the one. It proved to be a huge success for the Jones' across
the Atlantic.
"Martyn's a real perfectionist, in fact it took seven
months to produce and complete. At times it was tough and
a little depressing, but I don't think it shows on the album."
Now things were rolling, the album taking shape and then bang!
Another blow. The drummer, Gen decided to quit.
"He just didn't need it anymore. I guess it was the amount
of inactivity. With me in the studio all day, and him and
the rest of the band waiting for things to happen, he got
tired of waiting."
Finally the album is finished, with a new bunch of kids to
impress as well as the fans. How are they going to manage
it? For a start they're doing smaller venues again. Isn't
that weird considering they used to be capable of selling
out decent sized venues?
"Nah. We don't mind, with all that's happened. I'm just
pleased to be playing at all," he replies genuinely.
"It's good to play a smaller crowd that know your set
list rather than a half hearted large crowd."
I quizzed Mike about the question that all will be wanting
to know about. Just how are Jesus Jones going to slot right
bank into today's scene?
"I hope that we don't fit in. We've gone past that point
of trying to fit it. We don't want to be part of the herd."
