The
album, released by Candid Records - the original home of Jamie
Cullum, has several covers, all stunning mind you. Mishka's
version of Billie Holiday's 'God Bless This Child' is simply
soothing. So does this mean that the young saxophonist finds
it hard to write her own songs?
"I do on my own, I find it easier writing with other people.
It's more difficult starting with a blank space but if you work
with someone, they usually already have an idea and once somebody
has something it's so easy to tell them that."
How long did the album actually take to record?
"Well we already had the idea of what songs I wanted to
record. Writing the material actually didn't take that long.
I asked my guitarist to arrange and I gave him an idea of what
kind of sound I was looking for, for each song. Recording only
took two months. We did everything in two months and we had
a few weeks off and then we did the mixing."
Ah but was she happy it?
"I am," Mishka begins with a big smile. "I'm
happy, but you know obviously like a year later you listen to
anything and think 'I wish I could have done that'."
Though debut albums are special.
"Exactly. I'm very happy with it but you know as an artist
you're never satisfied with your work." Mishka laughs gently.
"I used to do lot of painting when I did A level art,"
she continues. "I could never just finish something and
leave it."
Her songs may develop from a few chords on her guitar but Mishka
admits that she gets heavily involved in her writing, particularly
with her lyrics. "That's where I put my identity,"
she explains. "I have a book, which I'll write in anything.
If I need something to draw on I'll flick through it."
