Danny's a really good
mate, he's the most arrogant man in the world but I think he's
the best British director living since David Leigh. Unfortunately
'Judge Dredd' isn't a good film. He was very frustrated by the
film, as
Stallone was responsible for ruining his vision of it. Sooner
or later Danny will make a film that is fucking brilliant."
We talk more about 'Boston Kickout', particularly about it's
title.
"It's the name of the game that we played when we were
kids, nothing more."
Has it got anything to do with the opening credit sequence?
That was great.
If that was real was the rest of the film really real?
"About 95% of the film is autobiographical. It's a true
story."
So would you agree that it's generally a good idea that when
you make your first movie you want to write and film about something
you know?
"Yeah. This is a totally personal film. The relationships
in it are very similar to all my relationships. The relationship
between Phil and his father, is like
myself and my father and Phil and his cousin is a combination
of two real relationships. But also 'Young Americans' for Danny
is autobiographical but probably 25% of it's real. He's hidden
it, by bringing in the cop character and changing all that kind
of stuff. The characters are all based on people that exist.
They are combinations though. Things have changes. With the
golf
club incident, the truth is I was in the back of the car. It
really happened."
Did you really walk along the side of canal and pick up a dead
fish?
I always walked by the lakes when I really had a lot of stuff
to think about.
One night, it wasn't exactly in that place, there was this fish
lying there. I put
it back in the water and it sank. It's something I remember."
You're film was the first film ever to use an Oasis song. How
come it never appeared on the soundtrack?
"It was a stupid error to be honest. It was a fault of
Zomba Music who put out the soundtrack album. We, being Boston
Films, started contracting all the songs before the soundtrack
album. The record company said "no we want to contract
the songs, otherwise we have sub license them from you".
We didn't mind. So they did that but they wasted three or four
months before they began contacting people. " >>
