These gigs were taking
place while the band was at university. So was it literally
a case of all work and all play?
"I actually got two degrees," laughs Jamie. "Mine
and Raph's as I wrote all his essays for him by giving him my
old notes and he copied out mine. I don't know if that is a
good thing on me or a damning incitement of the quality of the
university."
"Jamie and Owen were in a higher year," begins Steve,
"but when we were finishing our degrees the band wasn't
really kicking off as much, so we had a lot of time to study.
A year later it started to get a bit more hectic and by that
point there was not enough time to do any studying because the
band was taking up so much time. Basically Jezz and Raph fucked
up their degrees. Jezz didn't get a degree as he sat the wrong
exam for a completely different subject."
They also met Abbi, their 'manager', or as they refer to her
in almost Hunter S Thompson 'Fear and Loathing' sense, their
'lawyer'. At the university another student was managing them
but with Abbi working for a management company in London it
seemed appropriate to go with her. Only "mad" director
decisions of sacking all the staff and bands meant that Abbi
would choose to take on the band herself.
"It was always the ideal thing for us to have someone that
was doing everything and finding Abbi, we finally got that,"
admits Jamie. "Someone who is devoted to us, lives for
running us and doesn't get paid that much." He pauses before
laughing, "well not yet anyway."
