The band worked with Elbow's Guy Garvey on some B-Sides for
the single 'Munich' and Jim Abbiss who produced their debut
album previously produced UNKLE, Kasabian and Ladytron amongst
others. Did they look back at what Jim had achieved to see
if there was anything that he could bring to the band?
"We had a meeting when we had the demos that made up
most of the album," starts Tom. "We had a good feeling
about him, from what he was saying about our songs, what he
wants to do with our sound. We appreciated his back catalogue
and there was the business side of it but it came down to
the fact that during the first four weeks he was the fifth
creative member of the band."
"We were impressed with his roster," adds Chris.
"As far as certain elements that go through each of the
previous bands he's worked with, as far as making interesting
music goes, he was not scared to be poppy at the same time."
From what Tom was saying you had to get on with him well,
did you?
"Yeah he's like a really good mate," declares Chris
with clear distinction that wouldn't suggest anything otherwise.
He continues, "He supports Liverpool and so I text him
after the Champions League result and he called me up and
he was wankered and was in an Irish pub in Chicago mixing
Kasabian at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. He's been a great
help to us."
There's a lot been made in the press about the band's influences,
in that they scarily might sound something like them. Avoiding
all the other bands mentioned to them and having read that
they are both big fans of Tom Vek, I ask if he may have influenced
them. Apparently not at the time of recording, as Chris describes
him, the 'good lads's' album arrived after they had finished
their own. Though perhaps there may be an influence on future
material.
"I admire him for what he's doing. We listened to a lot
of Talking Heads while we were recording," begins Tom.
"I like the way they make pop records." >>
