Does he feel that they have to gain extra publicity to remove
themselves from the shadow of Nude's most successful band?
"Yes, but not necessarily for that reason. There is a
bit of pressure that you feel when the record company reminds
you of the financial backing they've made and the need to
sell records, "You have to release singles and they have
to sell." You don't necessarily have to flog your guts
out to sell records. It'll sell itself if it's good. We'll
do a modicum of publicity for a single. Hopefully it'll help
sell itself. I don't know sales wise, what will make the company
happy."
Does he think they've got a different reaction from most sort
of indie fans due to the fact that Ultrasound is not stereotypically
an indie band? You know they haven't got a sleeky frontman
with a bit of a fringe.
"There's probably an awful lot of confusion about my
style really. What shall I be, what am I doing here?"
Exactly, they're not like the Suede following or whatever.
"You do get a hell of a mixture at our gigs. The attention
is always to like be everything to everyone."
So has the band got a better reaction or have they lost some
fans due to the fact that they don't follow the normal sort
of niche that people like?
"If I'm going to loose those sort of fans, then I didn't
really want them in the first place. They're image followers
and that's nothing to do with music. We tend to play and hope
that people enjoy the band and come back for more."
The London Fashion Week thing for Red or Dead how did that
come about? >>
