"...out of my head structured, like, really structured.
Probably more structured than they should. I should ease up
on my structuring! They always come out verse, bridge, chorus,
verse, bridge, chorus, middle eight, chorus, end. Which is
really structured right? I think sub consciously a lot of
pop music has come into my brain."
Reading through Jem's comments from past interviews you get
an insight into her positive outlook on life bursting at the
seams with an almost unlimited belief in her ambitions. Of
course we all wanted to be rock stars when we were young but
for Jem it seemed to be an unstoppable ambition. So where
did this attitude and self-confidence come from?
"I think there's a few things. Well one thing I didn't
realise until recently was that I think it comes from being
Welsh that's driven me. I mean I didn't realise that being
Welsh gives you something coz when I went to college, people
just take the piss out of the Welsh all the time and I think
you get a bit like, 'Right!' My parents definitely instilled
something in me to believe that anything is possible. I've
never felt like I can't do anything except for drawing maybe,
as I'm shit at that!”
It seems she won't be designing her own
artwork then. Although she was involved with the cover for
the album which has a classic look aided by a young girl featured
on the front. Jem admits it was her at the age of six and
before choosing it she did her own research around London.
"I actually took it round Hammersmith and Chiswick when
we made it because I was so worried that the label wouldn't
like it."
Investigate further into Jem's past and you'll discover some
interesting tales. One of her favourite comedian's is the
late Bill Hicks (the song 'Just a Ride' is a tribute to him)
and Jem met his brother after he turned up to one of her gig's.
Also, being a big Stevie Wonder fan she wrote an unsuccessful
letter to him in braille asking him to produce her album.
