"You know what? Ultimately it's absolutely everything,
all the ingredients. But the reality is that I only know that
coz I start thinking, 'Shit, it's the beats,' because I was
so involved with all the production. I was so anal about the
beats. Even with particular snare beats I was like 'No, that
sounds awful.' I mean you can take a song anywhere. You can
make it anything. The thing is I might think, 'Wow, if you
have the wrong snare sounds then that will affect the track
and then you go, well what about the bass line?' That's not
even before you have the melody and the lyrics which are key
as well. So it's crazy y'know? I've always loved hip-hop and
dance, I always wanted heavy beats. But I don't think you
can pinpoint it, it's weird. I think the most important part
to me would be the melody but again what if you have a melody
but shit lyrics with a horrible snare drum? Oh 80's snare
drums just disgust me!"
Jem spent a number of years in Brighton studying for her law
degree. At this time, Jem was also helping DJ Adam Freeland
run breaks label Marine Parade, successfully promoting DJ's
and festivals. So did Brighton have any special qualities
for her that affected her music or was it that there was simply,
something in the water?
"The thing was that I knew before I was in Brighton that
I would do it. When I was a kid I knew I'd be a singer. When
I ended up in Brighton I think it was the perfect place to
be musically, but just life wise, forget my singing, the life
experience I had there is more important. In terms of running
the label, organizing the festivals and the record label was
such an amazing thing to do. I think those years were important,
it wasn't so much what affect Brighton had on my music but
for me it was just a huge time of growth. I actually went
to work for the Big Beat Boutique (a Skint Records club night)
and I literally started the week Fatboy Slim had a number
one. It was mad because we were in the same offices as Skint,
so it was really crazy as we were thrown into a really fun
time. It was definitely at a time when Brighton was at this
sort of peek. It was just a lovely place with loads of dance
music and maybe it added to that thing of, 'Yeah you can do
it?' >>
