Dave Matthews, from
The Dave Matthew’s Band fame, is the co-founder of ATO,
Jem’s American label. When they signed Jem they added
her to a diverse roster which includes David Gray, My Morning
Jacket and Ben Kweller. It’s a label that Jem describes
as ‘friendly,' with organised drinking sessions and
one that allowed her to have creativity on the album. She
also describes it as ‘close and almost family like.’
They even drop hints to its parent company RCA, of how much
Dave Matthews' appreciates her music, which of course, never
hurts.
So what was it like to receive the album for the first time
after its completion?
"Ah, that's another one of those 'weird' things. I
didn't have the album. I'd been waiting for ages for a copy
and I go to KCRW weirdly to do my first ever MTV interview
and they wanted to interview Nic (Harcourt) as well. So we
go there and Nic turns around and goes, 'Oh thanks for the
credit, the album looks wicked,' and I'm like, 'How do you
know?' 'Oh I've got 500 copies upstairs!' To be fair he'd
just got it in the post that day but I was like, 'Erm, can
I have one please?' So yeah the album I got was from Nic.
He presented it to me this time last year. kind of trippy
y'know?"
Jem's personal music collection hosts a wide range of styles
and artists ranging from Marvin Gaye to Wu Tang Clan. But
was there anything else aside that could possibly shape her
musical output?
"Funnily enough, the song '24' is inspired by the TV
show so I have written songs in that respect, so I could be
watching TV or reading a book. I get inspired by Buddhist
philosophy. Well if you take something like that it's interesting
because it's not really religion, it's more like lifestyle
and kind of self help so there's things you can read into
that which can be relevant to everyone. 'Save Me' for example,
that's a song about having a crazy mind and how to calm it
down and so that came from that. I can get inspired by pretty
much anything." >>
