"It came about because Fergal and I heard Nirvana. We
had to start up a band after hearing them. I'd been playing
violin since I was seven, but violin wasn't really good enough
when you want to write."
According to Mark they don't know the reason for JJ72 or even
why they are doing it. It has just come together naturally.
"Nothing's been pushed and nothings been held back. It
has all fallen into place naturally. I'd like to think that
there is a reason there, that we're not aware of."
The band has been very successful recently off the back of
last year's single 'October swimmer' and their recent release
'Snow'. How does a band so submerged in industry praise often
surrounded by the sleaze of the indie fraternity view it all?
"I don't know, I'm not going to say this in an arrogant
way but it doesn't really matter because we know that it is
bullshit anyway. As you said before, we're one of the buzz
bands of the moment. Hopefully there were people that went
away thinking we were great and that's the people we want
to stick with. So whatever gets said in the press about us
it doesn't matter. Not because we don't care about them, but
the band and songs were around before they'd read about us.
We knew we were good before so we don't really need them to
tell us we're good."
It must still feel good though?
"Well, it'll be packed again in here tonight but if half
way through the set most people just walked out, we'd just
keep on playing because when it comes down to it, we're not
playing for other people. I don't care what other bands say
we're not playing for other people. We're playing for ourselves.
We're selfish, that's all." >>
